Chunky is the long-standing, command-driven pre-generator (/chunky radius, /chunky start) that batch-generates an area and writes it to disk, but it has no awareness of LOD renderers like Voxy, so chunks it generates don't automatically show up in Voxy's extended view. Voxy WorldGen solves this by running continuously and passively in the background while you play, feeding every chunk it generates straight into Voxy's LOD data with no manual commands or import steps required — making it the more purpose-built choice for anyone using Voxy, while Chunky remains better suited to one-off bulk pre-generation before a server launch.

What Is Voxy?

Voxy is a lightweight Fabric mod that pushes Minecraft's render distance far beyond vanilla limits by converting distant terrain into simplified LOD geometry instead of full-detail chunks, but it can only render LOD terrain for areas it already has data on — normally built up gradually as you explore. Voxy WorldGen removes that bottleneck by generating new chunks on its own and feeding them directly into Voxy's LOD pipeline, so your extended view fills in even in directions you haven't personally walked, flown, or teleported to yet.

Does Voxy WorldGen Hurt Performance?

Voxy WorldGen is designed to generate chunks passively in small slices spread across many ticks rather than blocking the game outright, and settings like Scanner Interval and Max Parallel Tasks let you dial that workload up or down depending on your hardware — but the mod is still openly flagged as a work in progress that "may be unstable/slow," especially for dedicated servers where server-side support is still maturing, so the safest approach is starting conservative and scaling up while watching FPS/TPS through the built-in F3 stats.

Voxy WorldGen Settings Explained

Mod Settings

Mod Settings

Access using mod menu

The config screen, accessed through Cloth Config/Mod Menu, covers six settings: Mod Enabled is the master on/off switch; Show F3 Menu Stats adds the mod's generation queue and progress data to the debug overlay; Generation Radius (default 128) sets how many chunks out from the player the mod actively scans for terrain to generate; Scanner Interval (default 20 ticks, or one second) controls how often it re-checks for new chunks needing generation; Max Queue Size (default 20,000) caps how many chunks can be queued at once as a safety limit; and Max Parallel Tasks (default 20) sets how many chunks generate simultaneously, with lower values recommended on weaker hardware to avoid stutter.

Voxy WorldGen and Shader Compatibility

Shader Compatibility

Shader Compatibility

Independent of Voxy WorldGen

Since Voxy WorldGen's entire job is feeding terrain into Voxy, its shader compatibility is really just Voxy's shader compatibility: because Voxy's LOD pipeline differs fundamentally from vanilla rendering, shader packs need explicit built-in support to render it correctly, and currently Photon is the main shader with that integration. It's worth testing your shader of choice with Voxy alone before assuming a fully shaded, far-render-distance world out of the box.

A collection of Voxy compatible shader packs are listed and showcased here.

If you're already running Voxy and want its extended render distance to actually look full instead of trailing off into grey, unloaded LOD terrain, Voxy WorldGen is a near-essential companion — its passive, auto-ingesting approach beats manually pre-generating with Chunky for this specific use case. Just go in with realistic expectations: it's still a work in progress, so keep an eye on performance settings and don't expect rock-solid stability on every server setup just yet.
