Aquamirae is an atmospheric adventure mod by the creator Obscuria that turns Minecraft's quiet, often-ignored Deep Frozen Ocean into a haunting, story-driven dungeon biome. Instead of adding a sprawling tech tree or dozens of unrelated features, it does one thing extremely well: it builds a self-contained, lore-rich expedition that ends in one of the better boss fights in the modded ecosystem. With well over 40 million downloads on CurseForge, it has become a staple in adventure and exploration modpacks.
This guide walks through what the mod adds and how to work your way from your first frozen outpost all the way to defeating the mod's spectral boss, Captain Cornelia.
At its core, Aquamirae transforms the vanilla Deep Frozen Ocean biome into an interconnected maze of ice, sunken wrecks, and drowned ruins. Because it generates inside an existing vanilla biome rather than registering a brand-new one, it stays compatible with most world-generation mods and works in existing worlds as long as new chunks are still being generated.
The headline features include:
The Ice Maze — a reworked Deep Frozen Ocean filled with structures both above and below the ice.
Custom structures — outposts, ruined towers, stranded ships, and a hidden shelter.
New mobs — a mix of hostile surface creatures, dangerous underwater predators, a peaceful gold-dropping moth, and a mini-boss.
Captain Cornelia — a multi-phase ghost boss with custom animations, music, and a unique health bar.
Gear and consumables — several armor sets with half-set and full-set bonuses, themed weapons with special abilities, and food items that grant exploration buffs.
Atmosphere — custom ambient sounds, music, and particle effects designed to make the biome feel eerie and alive.
Configurability — many features can be tuned through a config file.
The mod is loader-specific. The most actively maintained branch is the Forge edition for Minecraft 1.20.1, which continues to receive updates, while older releases exist for versions like 1.19.4, 1.19.2, and 1.18.2. A Fabric build is also distributed through Modrinth. Always match the download to your exact Minecraft version and loader.
A few mods pair naturally with it. Aquamirae Delight adds cross-compatibility with Farmer's Delight, introducing new dishes, ingredients, and themed knives, plus quality-of-life tweaks like breedable Golden Moths.
Everything in Aquamirae happens inside the Ice Maze — the mod's name for the transformed Deep Frozen Ocean. You can find it by exploring naturally (its jagged, frozen terrain stands out) or by locating the biome with commands if you'd rather skip the search.
The biome is split into two layers. Above the ice are weathered, frozen-in-time structures; below the surface is a cold, cavernous aquatic zone full of predators and unique plant life. At night, hostile mobs spawn on the surface, so the area is dangerous around the clock.
Outposts and towers. Scattered across the ice are pillager-held camps and crumbling towers. These are your early-game stops — they hold loot, scattered lore entries that flesh out the mod's story, and plenty of enemies guarding them.
Ships. Stranded vessels are the most important structures for progression. They're crewed by hostile pillagers, but one specific pillager in the captain's quarters carries the Shell Horn — the item required to summon the boss. Clearing a ship is effectively the gateway to the endgame.
The Shelter. This is the hidden vault of the biome. It houses the Frozen Chest, which holds the mod's best loot. You can't reach it on your own terms easily — access is tied directly to defeating the boss, who drops both the key and a map pointing to a nearby Shelter.
Aquamirae's creatures are built around the icy theme and tie directly into crafting and progression. The notable ones:
Tortured Souls — hostile surface enemies that can turn invisible and inflict blindness, making nighttime exploration genuinely threatening.
Golden Moths — peaceful creatures that spawn at night and drop gold, making them a worthwhile (if minor) farming target. With Aquamirae Delight installed, they can be bred.
Anglerfish — aggressive underwater predators lurking beneath the ice. Falling into the water during the boss fight is especially dangerous because of them.
Spine Fish — another underwater hazard found in the deeper zones.
Eels — fast, evasive creatures with area attacks, found in deeper areas like the Shelter.
Mother of the Maze — a mini-boss that can be triggered by encounters with Anglerfish, adding an extra layer of danger underwater.
Captain Cornelia — the spectral final boss (covered in detail below).
Each mob drops materials — things like Fins, Esa, and Abyssal Amethyst — that feed into the mod's weapons, armor, and tools.
Progression in Aquamirae runs through its crafting materials and themed equipment.
Weapons include the Terrible Sword (a high-burst critical weapon that's the recommended pick for the boss), the Coral Lance, and the Dagger of Greed, each with its own combat effect. Armor comes in several sets — notably the Seawolf and Abyssal classes — with bonuses that scale depending on whether you wear a half-set or a full-set.
Key progression items are the Shell Horn (used to summon the boss) and the Frozen Key (the only item that opens a Frozen Chest — the chest can't be broken or accessed any other way).
Consumables like Sea Stew and Poseidon Breakfast grant buffs that meaningfully help during exploration and combat, so they're worth stocking before a fight.
Captain Cornelia is the centerpiece of the mod — a ghost with custom animations, dedicated music, and a unique health bar. The fight rewards preparation over raw gear, and going in blind almost guarantees a loss.
To summon her, you need the Shell Horn from the pillager in a ship's captain's quarters. The horn only works under specific conditions: you must be inside the Ice Maze biome, near water, and above ground level. Use it anywhere else and nothing happens. When activated, Cornelia rises from the water and the encounter begins.
Two rules define the entire fight:
She is immune to all ranged attacks. Bows, crossbows, and tridents do nothing — melee is the only way to damage her. Shields are strongly recommended because she strikes fast and hits hard.
She has 200 HP, but she heals. Her health regenerates multiple times across distinct phases, so simply out-damaging her isn't enough.
Phase One – Initiation. She opens with quick melee strikes, ramping up her attack speed and unpredictability over time. She makes it hard to escape — she can pull you toward her across the slippery ice or charge at you, potentially knocking you into the Anglerfish-infested water. She may also cast Levitation, lifting nearby players and mobs.
Phase Two – First Regeneration. Once she drops to about 20% HP, she levitates and spins you around her while healing all the way back to full (200 HP). During this transition she summons three poison chakrams that orbit the area, dealing contact damage and poison. You'll need to dodge these while she resets. She only performs this full regeneration twice in the whole fight.
Phase Three – Sustained Regeneration. When she's brought down to around 5% HP, she enters a defensive state where she passively heals roughly 5–7% at a time. This is where most attempts fail — without a way to shut off her healing, securing the kill becomes nearly impossible.
The single most important item to bring is a Splash Potion of Weakness. Applying Weakness before the final phase nullifies her passive regeneration and lets you finish her. Beyond that:
Use high-burst melee weapons — the Terrible Sword is ideal because its critical damage can punch through her healing cycles. Seawolf-class weapons are also effective.
Wear a full Aquamirae armor set (Seawolf or Abyssal) for the survivability bonuses.
Stack Strength, Resistance, and Regeneration potions, plus food buffs like Sea Stew or Poseidon Breakfast.
Dodge relentlessly — since she heals from landing hits on you and during her phases, minimizing the damage you take is as important as the damage you deal.
Keep a shield up for her dashes and rapid strikes, and stay mindful of the icy terrain and nearby water so you don't get knocked into the Anglerfish.
Defeating Cornelia is the payoff for the whole expedition. Guaranteed drops include the Frozen Key (opens Frozen Chests) and the Three-Bolt Helmet — a non-craftable piece of the Three-Bolt Armor set that lets you swim through the Ice Maze's underwater sections without freezing. She also drops a map to a nearby Shelter, where the Frozen Chest awaits.
Other possible drops (chance-based) include an Oxygen Tank, a Treasure Pouch, the Echo of the Ship Graveyard, and a themed music disc. There's also a small chance — reportedly very low, around 5% — to obtain the powerful Coral Lance, which boosts Seawolf armor abilities and deals double damage to Ice Maze creatures. During December and January, the Coral Lance is replaced by a seasonal Sweet Lance, which can be eaten without being consumed.
If you want a clean route from zero to boss kill:
Find the Ice Maze. Explore the Deep Frozen Ocean or locate it with commands.
Clear outposts and towers for early loot and to read the lore entries.
Gear up by farming mob materials and crafting an Aquamirae armor set and a strong melee weapon (aim for the Terrible Sword).
Raid a Ship and take the Shell Horn from the captain's quarters.
Stock consumables and brew a Splash Potion of Weakness — this is non-negotiable for the final phase.
Summon and defeat Captain Cornelia near water, above ground, inside the biome.
Follow her map to the Shelter, open the Frozen Chest with the Frozen Key, and claim the mod's best loot.
Aquamirae succeeds because it's focused. Rather than overwhelming you with systems, it delivers a tight, atmospheric adventure with a clear goal, a memorable antagonist, and a boss fight that demands actual strategy — particularly the Weakness-potion trick that turns an unwinnable damage race into a beatable encounter. It slots neatly into almost any exploration or adventure modpack and gives the frozen oceans, normally one of Minecraft's emptiest biomes, a real reason to visit.
